WES2009 in kiosk mode to normal mode ?

    Hi Brad,

what is the way to safely exit out of XPe/WES2009 running in kiosk mode to Win XPe/WES2009 normal mode if there is one? What changes if any in the kiosk setup should be done to achieve it this change?

     Appreciate the response.

    Thank you,

    Larry

    Hi Larry,

I'm quite sure what you mean here by "kiosk mode". Is your device running a custom shell and you are trying to exit out of it? If you have access to regedit on the device you can change HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon\Shell value to explorer.exe, cmd.exe, etc... You could also mount the registry hive offline on another system and make the change. Just make sure whatever executable you specify is actually on the device. Smile

Can you provide more detail on what "kiosk mode" is?

    Hi Brad,

XPe/ WES2009 in kiosk mode prevents and prohibits you to accessing most of the Win XPe features, i.e., toolbars, dialogs, OS, basically it locks most of the resources from the user and shows only the ones your app needs it to see. It can be done via Internet Explore or your own app.

So, most of the time I need to run my app in kiosk mode, but I also need to be able to exit gracefully from it for very special users and access OS.

    Thank you,

    Larry

     Hi Larry,

I think you are referring to using a custom shell, which does create a "kiosk" type experience where the user interface is not Windows Explorer for example, but your own custom program. You can read more about custom shell here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms838335%28WinEmbedded.5%29.aspx

To achieve you goal of having a different shell based on which user is logged in, follow the guidance here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms838576%28WinEmbedded.5%29.aspx

You can set up the Administrator account (for example) to log into Windows Explorer and a Standard User account that logs into your custom shell.

    Hope that helps,

    Brad

    Hi Brad,

     Apperciate the response.

Your reference to the custom shell rather than Win Explore is correct in my "kiosk mode" app. Thank you for references.

There is one issue - everything is fine if every user runs his/her own shell from the start based on Win access level apriori set. Now, what if you need to start in kiosk and based on certain app conditions get out of it to Win normal mode without rebooting the computer.

    Thank you,

    Larry
